Human hair care guide
General rules
Getting Hair Extensions is an investment. Although the longevity of your Hair Extensions also depends on the type of hair and installation method used, how you maintain the hair also plays a crucial role. If you nurture your Hair Extensions as if it was your hair, expect to have those Hair Extensions looking good for a while. However, if you neglect the investment you have made, you can expect to be disappointed with your purchase.
Human Hair Extensions are pieces of natural hair that are attached to a person's real hair to add volume and length. The key to making hair extensions last longer lies in taking proper care of them. Just like regular hair, human hair extensions need to be washed, conditioned, and groomed to help maintain shine, strength, and elasticity.
Human Hair Extensions can be a costly investment; therefore, you must choose the right styling products that will not damage them. Before applying any heat, always apply a thermal protectant to shield the hair. Ceramic or ionic styling tools are better choices for Hair Extensions. They are designed to control the heat more effectively. The less heat used on the hair, the better. Avoid using chemicals on the hair; instead, take the Hair Extensions to a professional who can process them appropriately.
One of the main reasons that people end up having problems with Human Hair Extensions that fall out and damage their natural hair, is that the Hair Extensions are not well maintained. Well-cared-for Hair Extensions will last a lot longer and will be easier on both hair and scalp.
100% Remy Virgin Indian Human Hair Extensions are a wonderful way to add highlights, and thickness or simply make your hair longer. While they can improve your look dramatically, if they’re not taken care of properly, they won’t do much for you. These simple tips will help you take the best care of your Hair Extensions so that they will last a long time and you will get your money's worth.
How to Care For Human Hair Extensions?
Things you will need:
- Moisturizing shampoo.
- Moisturizing conditioner.
- Deep conditioner.
- Shine serum or silicone.
- Heat protection.
Detangling hair
One of the most important things about Hair Extensions is that you must baby them. When you are brushing your hair, be gentle. Without the proper treatment, your Hair Extensions will get damaged quickly.
To get rid of tangles, gently comb out human hair extensions using a wide toothbrush or a detangling brush. While combing, do not just insert the brush and start brushing from the root (the top where the hair was fixed) or the middle of the hair; instead, start combing or brushing from the ends or tips and slowly work your way to the top (the root). Support the extension or Wig with your hand while brushing to avoid pulling some strands of the Hair which is known as shedding.
Washing and styling
1. Shampoo & Conditioner.
It is advisable to wash your hair at least once a week to remove dirt and oil buildup, but not more than three times a week. Washing hair too often will make it appear too dry and may get it damaged faster, which is what nobody likes.
It is best to wash gently with cold water with a moisturizing shampoo free of sulfite and alcohol, and thereafter use a moisturizing conditioner. This step is especially important because the hair will not get any of the moisture from the natural oils your scalp produces. Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will keep your hair healthy. Rinse the hair and dry it.
2. Deep conditioner.
Don’t forget to deep condition. Once a week you want to deep condition your Hair Extensions. Leave it on the hair for approximately 20 to 30 minutes and rinse. This extra TLC (Tender Loving Care) will give your hair an extra moisturizing boost.
4. Let the Hair Extensions dry naturally.
Hair Extensions need to be let to dry naturally. Pat the hair dry and avoid rubbing with a towel as this will lead to breakage and matting. It is best to allow human hair extensions dry in the air, as excessive use of a hair dryer will lead to damage to the hair. However, if necessary, the dryer should be put on a cool setting, and the extension should be combed out gently with a wide toothbrush while drying.
5. Trim your Hair Extensions.
Keep those ends trimmed. No matter what you do, your Hair Extensions will inevitably get split ends. The best way to keep split ends from getting out of control is to regularly trim them. Trim the ends of the hair every 6 to 10 weeks.
Keep in mind that you don’t want to trim too much, otherwise, you will quickly lose the length of your Hair Extensions. You can either do it yourself or have a professional trim them.
Remember that, unlike your hair, this Hair extension does not grow back if you cut it. So, remember to always take your new Hair Extensions to a salon professional if you need them customized. This will give you the best results.
6. Styling your human hair.
It is best to discuss your human hair style preferences with your stylist. Use styling products that are alcohol-free such as mousse, gel, and hairspray in moderation. Avoid excessive use of oily or greasy products, as this can attract dirt and oil buildup thereby making the Hair tangle.
7. Heat protectant.
Use a heat protectant. Heat is the biggest enemy of human hair extensions. Excessive use of heat causes the ends of the hair to weaken and become brittle, leading to breakage. If heat must be used, heat protectant must be applied to the hair beforehand.
Nowadays, just about everyone uses heated appliances on their hair. Whether it’s a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron, they all have one thing in common: they damage your hair.
If you want to make your Human Hair Extensions last, your best bet is to use a heat protectant whenever you use a heated appliance on your Hair Extensions. This simple step will prevent breakage and keep your locks looking great a last longer.
8. Wavy/curly human hair extensions.
To prevent frizz, do not touch your waves. Allow Hair Extensions to air dry or use a hairdryer with a diffuser attached. You should separate the waves during the drying process with your fingers. Try not to overdo it. The less manipulation, the better.
Due to the nature of the waves/curls, we do not suggest frequent flat ironing to prevent changes in texture or wave pattern. For extra waves/curls, Hair Extensions can be set in rollers.
Daily before going to bed, braid your Hair Extensions into one loose large braid at the back of the neck. In the morning, undo the braid and comb through beginning at the ends and working your way up to the roots.
9. Sleeping with human hair.
Avoid sleeping with your human hair wet or rough as this will make it get tangled while sleeping. Plait the hair, pin it up, roller-set it, or roll with bendy rollers before sleeping. Sleep with a satin cap or on a satin-covered pillow to avoid pillow friction.
Showering and swimming
1. Showering
Do not use products that contain sulfur, such as dandruff shampoos. Use recommended products that are specially designed to improve the condition of your Hair Extensions.
When showering, tilt your head back and cleanse from the top of the head downward. Avoid facing your head downward. Condition and de-tangle only from mid-strand to end, avoiding the scalp area.
After showering, apply the leave-in condition to restore your hair's natural ph. balance. Dry your Hair Extensions by wrapping them with a towel to remove moisture. Always dry the base area thoroughly to avoid bond breakdown.
Avoid drying in a scrubbing motion. If using a blow dryer, use medium to low heat and finish with an excellent shot once the hair is completely dry.
2. Swimming
Activities that result in a constant, damp environment, especially swimming in seawater and chlorine, may lessen the longevity of your human Hair Extensions.
Before swimming, wet the hair completely to prevent chlorine and saltwater from sticking to your hair. Immediately after swimming, apply the leave-in conditioner to eliminate damage from alkalinity in the water and dry the base area as prescribed above.
How to care for a lace wig?
1. Washing
Before washing the hair, spray a mixture of conditioner and water and brush the hair from the bottom up. You must gradually wet the hair down and brush it gently before you completely wash the hair.
If the hair is very dry and a lot of water is added at once, the hair will swell up like a sponge and tangle. Therefore, it is important to gradually wet the hair and brush it.
2. Applying shampoo
Rinse the wig in cold water. This is very important because you do not want the heat from the water to cause the cap construction to break down or cause the hair to detach from the cap.
Apply the shampoo to the wig. Focus on the forehead area of the wig, which may be heavily soiled. Treat the wig delicately, as you would a delicate garment. Avoid using heavy friction.
3. Rinsing the shampoo
Rinse the shampoo from the wig. Always rinse the shampoo off with water flowing in the same direction of the hair, from the roots to the ends.
4. Towel dry the wig
After rinsing, human hair wigs should be placed on a flat towel to have the excess water dabbed away. DO NOT brush or comb the wig while it is still wet.
Due to the water absorbency, the hair shaft expands, and the root-knot loosens causing the hair to shed dramatically.
How to care for pre-bonded hair extensions?
1. Washing
Do not shampoo your hair for 48 hours after your service, including initial and maintenance services. This will give you enough time for the bonds to settle and ensure that your Pre-bonded Hair Extensions or Tape-in hair extensions will not slide out through premature contact with cleansing chemicals.
Expect to see small quantities of naturally released hair trapped in the bonds after some time. This is quite normal and should not be interpreted as hair being pulled out of the scalp by the Hair Extensions themselves. These ends can be cut by your stylist to minimize tangling close to the bonds.
Before bed, pull your Pre-bonded Hair Extensions back into a soft ponytail to prevent tangling while sleeping.
2. Brushing
Brush your Pre-bonded Hair Extensions twice a day. Do not use hard brush strokes. Separate your applied strands using your fingers and slowly brush them close to the scalp. This will avoid matting in this area. Do not use a hard-bristled brush. This may cause the Pre-bonded Hair Extension strands to slip out.
Use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove tangles from mid-strands to hair ends. Do not use a comb near the scalp area and the bonds.
3. Styling
Curling irons and hot rollers may be used but keep them at least 3cm to 4cm away from the hair bonds. Never use a hairdryer on high heat close to your scalp.
Warnings:
The amount of time the Hair Extensions can be left in depends on several factors. As the hair naturally grows out, the Pre-bonded Hair Extensions will be pushed further and further down the hair shaft, causing additional stress on the root area from the weight of the Pre-bonded Hair Extensions.
Also, since the hair naturally sheds between 50-100 hairs every day, the hair that falls out is attached to the Pre-bonded Hair Extensions and will cause tangling. The Pre-bonded Hair Extensions must be removed and replaced closer to the root to avoid these issues.
How to store human hair extensions?
Store with care.
Your Remy Virgin Indian Human Hair Extensions need to be stored with love when unused. Only that way you can rest assured there won’t be any unpleasant surprises next time you decide to put them on.
Clean, condition, dry and detangle them first then place them in an air-tight container big enough to accommodate them perfectly. After all, you don’t want to check on them after a month or so only to find a moldy, discolored, messy bundle – don’t you?
The cleaning part is to prevent discoloration of the Hair Extension pieces which can be caused by some styling products. This is especially problematic when dealing with lighter hair colors. Some hairsprays, gels, and other products when left to age on the Hair Extensions can turn yellow and dingy. They also make the Hair Extension more easily attract dirt and dust. Certain products can also become "gummy" over time and can result in tangles and knots in the Hair Extensions.
Making sure the Hair Extensions are dry before storing them is another important factor. Moisture left in the Hair Extensions when storing them can lead to the development of mold, mildew, and an unpleasant odor in the Hair Extensions. Even synthetic hair can develop a "sour" odor if stored when not completely dry.
Conclusion
The reason why some women can reuse their human hair extensions for as long as two years, or more is the maintenance practice.
Take care of your human hair like your natural hair
Human hair extensions and wigs require care just like the natural hair growing on your head. The better you take care of your human hair extensions, the longer they will last.
Most people think because they are called human hair, they don't require care and attention. Just like your natural hair gives you problems when you don't maintain it, so also human hair gives issues when not properly maintained.
Just take, for instance, it is a commonsense thing that if you leave the hair growing naturally on your head for some days, bathing on it, sleeping on it with it without taking time to take care of it or even brush it, it will tangle.
If you do any harsh thing to your natural hair, it will give you issues. That is just the same way your human hair extensions behave no matter the claims and assurances the seller must have given you.
Shampoo and condition the extensions at least twice a week to keep them clean and free of residues like dust, oil, and sweat. Dirt and oil can cause extensions to become tangled and messy. Use a leave-in conditioner after every wash to keep hair extensions hydrated.
Proper hydration fortifies and strengthens hair extensions, making them less prone to breakage. Thus, they will last longer and be in better condition. Comb or brush the hair extensions about twice a day. Don't brush too much as this will cause the extensions to fall out. Always comb in a downward motion. Start from the bottom and carefully work your way up with gentle strokes. This method prevents breakage.
Use protective styling products that shield hair extensions from heat and environmental damage. Spray a fine mist of the protective product onto your extensions every day before you style your hair or go outside to brave sun and weather exposure. Store extensions in a cool, dry place when not in use. Excessive heat and moisture can damage the extensions.
Tips
Although the Hair Extension is real, it is not receiving nutrients from the scalp like your own hair. Heat is your Hair Extension's biggest enemy. The more you use it, the shorter the life span of your Hair.
When you sleep, we highly recommend that you braid, wrap, or ponytail your hair together to prevent tangling. This will save time that would be spent untangling the hair the next morning. When washing the hair, always wash it going in a downward motion. Use your fingers in a horizontal movement between wefts to clean your scalp. When rinsing, do the same to be sure that all the shampoo and conditioner residues are washed out.
